A month or so ago we sent out the following:
"If you've ever been aboard the Turista Libre fun bus, you've met our husband-and-wife chauffeurs, Benjamin and Pilar. When they're not carting us happy gringos around their city, they're driving 9, 10, 11-hour days, waking up at 4 am and getting home at 7 pm, and in their off time caring for three kids and two grandkids. Turista Libre wouldn't be the same without their efforts. Neither have visas to cross to the U.S., so as a big thank you and Christmas bonus, we're planning a humongous gift basket of the most First World proportion, and we'd love your input. What should go in it?"
But along with suggestions, people sent cash. A pretty decent amount of it, too.
We were able to raise just about $350, which was enough for a coffee maker, crock pot, his and hers Starbucks thermoses, about a year's worth of Dunkin' Donuts coffee, jumbo art supplies for their twin daughters, a new backpack for their teenage son, sun tents and bubbles for their grandbabies and my favorite of all, the most amazing shower head known to man (at least this man ... every morning is a massage).
We delivered the gifts last night, along with pollo for dinner and pan de rosca for dessert. Muchas gracias a todos who contributed to making this Christmas and Dia de Reyes extra special for some very special, very thankful people. ¡Saludos!
